Wisdom, Resilience & Opportunity

At this year's Building Good Men Year 12 Breakfast, Year 12 students gained invaluable insights from Old Boys who have carved their own unique paths—each filled with challenges, unexpected turns, and lifelong lessons.

Principal Alan Jones open the morning by highlighting the strength of the Old Boys and network, encouraging students to use this "human library"— it is such a powerful resource for career and life guidance.

JP Olivier ('96) emphasized the power of Change, Challenge, and Family, urging students to "take a leap of faith", even when the path isn't linear.

Harry Fisher ('06) shared how his hobby became his career, encouraging students to "say yes to a lot of things" and embrace diverse experiences—even if it means unloading trucks or screwing lids on bottles. Reflecting on his journey, he highlighted the lasting value of education: "I have a commerce degree and although it doesn't look like I use it anymore with what I do, I use it every day! My degree has been so valuable, it has given me a skill set others don't have, and it has contributed to my success."

Richard O'Halloran ('09) reminded students that setbacks are part of growth: "Anyone who doesn't fail, hasn't really set out to do much yet." His advice? Be kind to yourself, look out for others, and learn from every experience.

Our Old Boy Association MC, Rohin Kehal ('18), also shared his perspective, reflecting on how his year working on the mines proved invaluable when seeking work. His experience, coupled with his accounting and finance education, opened more doors, reinforcing the importance of building a broad range of skills and experiences to create new career opportunities.

The panel answered key student questions, from navigating overwhelming workloads to finding motivation and exploring career paths.

Their collective wisdom? Be open to opportunities, lean into what excites you, and never be afraid to ask for help.

A huge thank you to our speakers for sharing their stories and insights—shaping the next generation of CCGS leaders.
