CCGS 1971 First XVIII Annual Reunion
On 19th October 2025, the members of the first Christ Church football team to bring home the Alcock Cup, along with a few invited guests, gathered at the CYC for drinks, luncheon and general camaraderie.
Cliff Watkins, the successful coach of the only three teams to win the Cup for the school was front and centre as always. Guests included Jon Sandford (1970), David Meagher (1971 cricket), Andrew Jenkins (1971 Rugby), Noel Thompson (1971 Rugby) and Ian Fortune (1971 rowing).
The lads started gathering at the downstairs bar pre Noon, before moving to the long table for lunch from 1pm. Most of the early chat was about the attendance of Team Vice Captain Gus Pallot, who travelled from Tassie to be at the gathering. Gus's effervescent and authentic personality was just the Filip the gathering needed.
Some mention was also made off the absence of Doug Young, John Cramer, Ian Avery, David Carter and Kim Malcolm, who unfortunately all had other commitments. Mike Seward, who now resides in Point Fairy, Victoria was also unable to attend but remains solidly in the thoughts of those who attended. Dean Bowker was also missed whilst "Willy" Bowers' was a late withdrawal on the day.
Paul Rumenos made his annual pilgrimage from Manjimup and as usual, lit the place up with his recollection of events some 54 years past. Tim Coyle was as eloquent and commanding a presence as always, whilst Ken Williams continues to baffle Cliff, despite being the best Centre half back of 1971. Gary Green is one of the few in attendance who could probably go out and dominate the wing as he did in the 70's.
As the luncheon wound down, the team took their shot of whisky from the Corporate Box and toasted our dearly loved departed mates Trevor "Chuck" Kay (no doubt the best full back of 1971); Michael Douglas, our towering full forward; and Micheal Fagan, (who along with Kim Malcolm received football honours in year 11); all of whom are greatly missed by the group.
Jon Blakeman was as charismatic as ever, as his passion for the group was obvious for all to see. Geoff Mitchell-Burden was a little more reserved than usual, probably due to the responsibility of being master of the "Corporate Box" and nectar of the Scots. Andrew Jenkins, Ian Fortune and Noel Thompson were all in fine voice, more so the longer the event went. David Meagher, after finding some difficulty locating the group, settled into a rhythm and even left a bottle of wine when he had to depart.
On that note, the team thanks Michelle Menezes, Alumni Engagement Coordinator for her assistance in locating some of the boys and providing our table with two bottles of wine. They were much appreciated and enjoyed by the group.
Towards the end of the day, those who were still in attendance took to looking forward to next year. Being the 55th year since the feat that bonded us all, Michelle has offered the assistance of the Alumni office in organising the event. Hopefully Mark Franklyn, Terry Goldacre, David Ransom and David Carter will be able to factor the date (when announced) into their schedule. It would be a great occasion if all our able-bodied teammates were in attendance to enjoy the fellowship of their 1971 colleagues.
As always, what happens at the reunion stays at the reunion, but this was a whole hearted gathering with the wine, whisky and conversation flowing in equal parts. Well done to those in attendance for another wonderful and successful reunion of like-minded souls. Ulinga on until October 2026.
