CCGS inspired aquatic Olympians
Thursday, 10 October 2019
The launch event for the School’s Aquatics Fundraising Campaign welcomed back former Olympians Bill Kirby OAM ('92), Jon van Hazel ('95), Tommaso D’Orsogna ('07) and current Olympic squad members George Ford ('10) and Andrew Ford ('12) as they shared their sporting career highlights with invited guests. All five enjoyed the mateship of the aquatic squads and acknowledged the life lessons competitive swimming taught them; namely how to win and lose, learn from your mistakes and follow the discipline of a high-performance culture. All of these contributed to their desire to achieve on the international stage for swimming and water polo.

“The introduction of a heated pool at Christ Church in the 1980s really helped propel the team to its first PSA swimming victory in 1987,” the old boys said. Since then, Christ Church has been one of the most successful schools within the PSA competition, with the Bowker/McGurk and then Kirby leadership seeing 13 swimming titles and multiple podium finishes. Water polo domination under the leadership of Scott Chrystal is seeing this sport record the strongest increase in student participation across all sporting codes.

As we eagerly await the opening of the CCGS/MLC joint Aquatic Precinct this summer we are reaching out to all old boys to support the upgrade of our changerooms. The School gym and pool continue to be available for all life members of the Old Boys’ Association and we need your help to continue to offer quality facilities for our entire community to enjoy.
