MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Like many, the Old Boys' Association and its Committee has been focused on recovering from the impact that COVID-19 has had on its operations. To date, I have been delighted by the way that the OBA has enabled members to access the opportunities that being part of the OBA community provides.

The OBA remains committed to creating an active community with engaged members. Since the February newsletter, the OBA has held its ever-popular annual Golf Day (62 participants) and hosted the Beverley and Districts PSA Annual Dinner (82 attendees). We have also provided opportunities for members to re-connect by facilitating year group reunions and most recently welcomed 60 members of the class of '96 back to the School for a special 25 year reunion.

The outlook for the remainder of 2021 is positive and I encourage you all to continue to engage with the OBA using our improved social media platforms and, where possible, by attending the exciting OBA events that will be held in the coming months.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything that the OBA can be doing to better support you and your fellow members.

Matt Caddy ('03)
President, Old Boys' Association

CLASS OF 1996, 25 YEAR REUNION

Staff who taught us back in ’96 joined old boys in the School Chapel to mark 25 years since leaving Christ Church Grammar School. School legend and recently retired Chaplain, Father Frank Sheehan, kindly agreed to return to the School for this special occasion. His reflections on all things Christ Church Grammar School and Essendon was followed by the school hymn accompanied by the organ. Although most had not sung the hymn since our final day of school - and despite the lack of singing practise and appalling tone - the hymn brought back vivid memories of our school days. Our reunion carried on afterwards at Steve’s Hotel with about 60 old boys attending for a (not so) quiet beer. It was fantastic to see such a great attendance, many of whom were boarders and had travelled to Perth for the event. A huge thank you to Deborah Hill and Larissa Nguyen of the Alumni Office and of course Father Frank Sheehan for helping to make our reunion such a great success. OBA GOLF DAY

Regardless of the final scores, the OBA Golf Day was enjoyed by all under perfect conditions at Mosman Park Golf Club. Congratulations to the Class of 1994 team consisting of Peter Chambers, Sheldon Day and Tom Wisdom who were the winners of the Roger Mackay Trophy. Second place went to the father/son team of Joe and Brad Angel (’69 and ’05 respectively), Ric Malcom (’69) and David Rawlinson (’69). A great day all round! Click here to view the photo gallery.

BEVERLEY AND DISTRICS PSA ANNUAL DINNER

Special thanks to Jon Doust (’65) who entertained guests at the 86th Beverley & Districts Combined PSA Old Boys Association (B & D Association) Annual Dinner recently. The OBA hosted the event with strong numbers and honoured traditions. Graeme Fardon (’77), was successful in presenting a motion to accept females into the B & D Association in the future and replace the term "old boys" with "scholars". As Graeme steps down as Chairman of the B & D Association we thank him for his efforts and vision for the future of this event.

OBA KARRATHA/PORT HEDLAND GATHERING
Old boys in the Karratha/Port Hedland area are invited to meet at the Grand Central Tavern, Tambrey Shopping Centre in Karratha on Sunday 2 May to watch the Western Derby (Fremantle vs WCE). With approximately 25 CCGS old boys in the region, what a great opportunity to enjoy the game! Please RSVP to Ben Breheny (’93) prior to Tuesday 27 April at ben.breheny@ausco.com.au.

SNAPSHOTS WITH FRIENDS
Special thanks to Jeremy Lefroy (’79) for sending in this picture of mates at the Charles Hotel watching Proud Mary, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band. Pictured: Paul Michael (‘79), Steven Norrie (‘80), Ross Clarke(‘79), Jeremy Lefroy and Ian Gilmour (‘77). The Alumni Office love to receive news and photos, so keep them coming! Follow our Facebook and LinkedIn pages for regular updates.

Congratulations to Myles McQuillan (’16) on taking gold in the U23 Men’s Coxless Four at the Australian Rowing Championships in Tasmania. Myles was also selected to row for the Under 23 national team in the men’s eight to compete at an Olympic simulation regatta in Penrith, Sydney on 11 June against the Olympic team. For the latest rowing updates see the DFC newsletter here.
